Author Birthday: Aaron Reynolds

A very Happy Birthday to author Aaron Reynolds! His picture books are filled with vibrant illustrations that keep children engaged, and fun word play that will have adults rolling on the floor laughing.

Chicks and Salsa is one of my favorites. The chickens at Nuthatcher farm are getting sick and tired of eating the same ol' chicken feed. The rooster leads the charge to raid the garden and create homemade salsa. When the rest of the barnyard animals catch of whiff of that spicy goodness, a fiesta is on!

Of course, when the farmer and his wife find out, they copy the animals' idea and all the veggies they need for salsa disappear. Naturally, the chickens have to figure out what culinary style they're going to try next.

Happy Birthday, Doreen Cronin!

A very Happy Birthday to Doreen Cronin!

Her books are just plain fun - from her Click Clack series to the Chicken Squad books, you will enjoy her rhythmic, rhyming style and Betsy Lewin's playful illustrations.

She says her 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Cooper, was the first person to tell her that she was a writer and encouraged her to work at her craft. After earning a law degree and practicing for a few years, she quit and started writing full-time. Thank you, Mrs. Cooper. If it wasn't for your influence, we may not have ever had the opportunity to enjoy Doreen's fantastic contributions to children's literature.

100th Post - Happy Birthday, Patricia Polacco!

Image result for patricia polacco

This incredible woman is a gifted storyteller. She has not only written and illustrated more than 115 children's books, but she is an advocate for children's rights and the plight of classroom teachers, has been a university guest lecturer, created art and literary courses for young people, hosts storytelling festivals, writers' seminars, teachers' retreats, and established an art camp in Russia.

Patricia writes what she knows. Many of her stories are based on her family and childhood. Her years of living on a Michigan farm with her Babushka are reflected in her work - folktales from her Russian and Ukranian Jewish roots, along with personal and family experiences.

Polacco has a distinctive writing style, which can best be describe as heart-warming. In fact, I have a tough time reading many of her books aloud to my classes without tearing up and, occasionally having to choke back a sob (Pink and Say, An Orange for Frankie).

If you haven't read her work, start with My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother or Thunder Cake, and be sure to make the recipe together.

Fun Fact: Polacco didn't start illustrating until she was 41 years old.
Thank you, Patricia Polacco, and Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Eric Carle!

Today Eric Carle celebrates his 89th birthday! He is best-known for The Very Hungry Caterpillar (click this link to hear him read it aloud),  but he was written and/or illustrated over 70 picture books for children.

Carle's trademark collage artwork gives his stories not only a vibrant, colorful, textured appearance, it creates lovable characters for his readers to connect to and enjoy.

As I was looking through my collection and the public library collection (who else loves being able to reserve books online and pick them up without having to search?!?), I noticed that he's written a few that begin with The Very. I opened the cover of The Very Lonely Firefly and read this lovely note from Mr. Carle to his young readers:

Dear Friends,
After The Very Hungry Caterpillar had been published I wanted to create a VERY quartet. With this book I have achieved that goal.

1. THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR is about hope. You, like the little caterpillar, will grow up, unfold your wings, and fly off into the future.

2. THE VERY BUSY SPIDER is about work. We need to work and finish our tasks despite the many diversions.

3. THE VERY QUIET CRICKET is about love. Crickets and people alike search for and hope to find a suitable mate.

4. THE VERY LONELY FIREFLY is about belonging. We all want to belong to a group, a family, our own fellow creatures.

I hope you like my firefly.

Sincerely,
Eric Carle

I'll admit to tearing up. To me, it is an incredible gift when someone who touches so many young lives through story reaches out in a very personal way to reinforce the purpose of his work.

If you've never read one of his books, or if you haven't made your way through his body of work, start now.

If you aren't able to get to a library or bookstore, Online Stories has produced quite a few of his books.

Once you have reveled in a bit of his work, there are some great online sources for learning more about him.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts has a wonderful website.

Mermaid Theatre Nova Scotia produced this video of several of his stories.

A short Q&A session with Eric Carle.

Have a VERY good time getting to know the wonderful world of Eric Carle!

* He has a 5th VERY book - The Very Clumsy Click Beetle.

Author Birthday: Gary Paulsen

I'm noticing a pattern.

Since I've begun posting tributes on authors' birthdays, both here and, more frequently, on Instagram, I have noticed that most of my favorite authors are well into their 70's and 80's. Go ahead and say it - I'm old. But as far as I'm concerned, my age is a gift. Because I was born when I was, my childhood was filled with the works of Beverly Cleary, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Catherine Woolley, and E.L. Konigsburg.

My children's generation can claim that their shelves were filled with J.K. Rowling, Lynne Reid Banks, Roald Dahl, Judy Blume, and...Gary Paulsen.

Celebrating his 79th birthday today, Gary Paulsen is every bit as tough and rugged as the men he writes. He prefers solitude to cities, and nature to the general public, he has strong opinions on modern society, is a true adventurer and a gifted storyteller.

Gary Paulsen writes for kids, to make an impression, to foster new ideas within them. In an interview with the New York Times (August 2006), Paulsen states, "Adults are locked into car payments and divorces and work. They haven't got time to think fresh. Name the book that made the biggest impression on you. I bet you read it before you hit puberty. In the time I've got left, I intend to write artistic books - for kids - because they're still open to new ideas."

Paulsen is the author of more than 170 books and doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. He is also a three-time Newbery award winner, but if you take the time to read a bit about him, or listen to him speak, it will become clear to you that he writes because he is driven to write, not because he is seeking accolades.

He loves writing and he knows first-hand the impact the right books can have on a child. Paulsen had a difficult childhood, a gross understatement to be sure, and credits his local librarian with changing the course of his life.

If you know a reluctant reader, especially a boy, put a Gary Paulsen book in his hands, and you will soon see a changed reader.

Start with Hatchet. You won't regret it.

Happy Birthday to Margaret Petersen Haddix!

I've started having my "Social Media Team" create videos for author birthdays and we post them to Instagram. Here'e the one they created for Margaret Petersen Haddix.

They were so excited to do it because we just finished reading one of her older books, Running Out of Time. If you scroll down on the post, you'll see that she replied - they were over the moon!

I've been reading this treasure to my 4th graders for years and, as time goes by, I have to explain more and more about the 1990's to my students, but it's always worth it.

Haddix is well-known for both her Missing series and her Shadow Children series, all of which I recommend for young adult and middle grade readers.

Be sure to visit her website. Her bio is interesting and kid-friendly, there's great interview in which she talks about herself as both a reader and a writer, and much more.

Our class is in the middle of Dear Mr. Henshaw right now, so I was delighted to see a link on her site that says "Writing a Report? Here's some quick information about me." I laughed out loud.

Edit: Boy, were they excited to see her reply!

Happy Birthday, Sid Fleischman!

When I taught 4th grade in California, we read this book every year in conjunction with our Gold Rush unit. Now that I teach in Washington, I can't break the habit and guess what? My students love the book just as much as my California kids, and I love having the opportunity to share the history of my hometown with them.

Thank you, Sid Fleischman, for a well-told tale that stands the test of time and...geographical location.
